Al Sherman : About
Albert Sherman was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1921. He received a Bachelor of Arts from the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology and studied with L. Moholy Nagy and Alexander Archipenko. Sherman then became art director and designer for Time-Life Books from 1965-1987, where he worked on the Life Library of Science, Foods of the Worlds and other now-classic book series. Sherman also served as NBC's art director from 1954-1965.
His work received the gold medal award at the New York Art Directors Club and won "Best Book of the Year" at the Art Directors Club of Metropolitan Washington.
In 1986, Al Sherman began a personal series of acrylic paintings he used as a vehicle for exploring social issues and conventions. Cookies became his main subject, because they allowed him to represent people without race or era getting in the way of his universal themes. "At the heart of the series," Sherman says, "there was an intentional sweetness that made this choice even more appropriate." The series totaled 90 paintings upon its completion in 1989. Ever since then, Sherman has dreamed about making the works known to the public.
Currently, he lives with his wife, Jane, in Alexandria, Virginia.
In 2006, Bruce Horton and John Watson purchased the collection
with plans to make Sherman's dream a reality.
